Power cuts and keeping your internet on with a UPS
Why your internet goes off when the power does, and how a UPS keeps you online through short outages.
Your SkyPro Internet equipment needs electricity. When the power goes off at home, the internet goes off too, even though our network is still running.
Why
Two pieces of equipment in your home plug into the wall:
- The PoE adapter (the small box near the socket). It sends power up the cable to the radio on your roof. If it has no power, the radio switches off and your internet stops.
- The router, which makes your Wi-Fi.
Keep your internet on with a UPS
A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is a battery box that keeps equipment running when the power goes off.
- Plug the UPS into the wall socket.
- Plug the PoE adapter and the router into the UPS.
- When the power goes off, the UPS keeps them running for a while, depending on its size.
A small UPS is usually enough for these two devices, because they use little power. An inverter or generator also works.
Tip
When the power comes back after a long cut, give everything 2–3 minutes to start up before testing.
After a power cut, the internet doesn't come back
- Check there are lights on the PoE adapter and the router.
- Make sure the socket is switched on and the plugs are pushed in fully.
- Try another socket.
- Restart: unplug both, wait 30 seconds, plug them back in and wait 2–3 minutes.
- Still offline? Follow My internet is not working.
Important
Power surges when electricity returns can damage equipment. A UPS or surge protector helps. Never open the PoE adapter or router, and don't plug them into a damaged socket.
