Where to put your router for the best Wi-Fi

Where your router sits matters more than which router it is. A few simple rules for strong Wi-Fi everywhere.

Updated 29 October 2026

Wi-Fi spreads out from the router in every direction. A router in a good spot can cover your whole home; the same router in a corner may leave far rooms with no signal.

Good spots

  • Central: in the middle of your home, so Wi-Fi reaches every room.
  • High: on a shelf or wall bracket, at least 1 metre off the floor.
  • In the open: not inside a cabinet or behind the TV.
  • Near where you use it most: the living room at home, or the main office at work.

Avoid

  • Corners and the far end of the building
  • The floor
  • Inside cabinets, drawers or metal boxes
  • Next to the fridge, microwave, fish tank or thick concrete walls

What you can do yourself

  1. Clear things away from around the router so nothing covers it.
  2. If it's on the floor, lift it onto a nearby shelf or table, without unplugging or pulling the cables.
  3. Keep microwaves, cordless phones and Bluetooth speakers away from it.

Need the router in a different room?

Moving the router further than its cable reaches means running a new cable. Ask us to arrange it, so the connection stays safe:

  1. Message us on WhatsApp at +234 808 110 4449.
  2. Tell us where the router is now and where you'd like it.

Important

Never unplug the small box near the socket (the PoE adapter) to move things around. It powers the radio on your roof, and your internet stops without it.
