My Wi-Fi is weak in some rooms
Why Wi-Fi gets weaker far from the router, and what you can do to cover your whole home or office.
Wi-Fi is a radio signal from your router. Walls, floors, distance and other electronics all weaken it. If the internet is fast near the router but slow or missing in some rooms, the problem is Wi-Fi coverage, not your SkyPro Internet connection.
Check it first
- Stand next to the router and run a speed test. See How to run a speed test.
- Run another test in the weak room.
- Fast near the router but slow in the room? It's Wi-Fi coverage. Try the steps below.
Things you can try
- Give the router a better spot. Central, high up and in the open works best. See Where to put your router. If the router needs moving to another room, ask us to do it for you.
- Move away from interference. Microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors and Bluetooth speakers near the router can weaken Wi-Fi.
- Use the right band. In far rooms, the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi often reaches better. Near the router, 5 GHz is faster. See 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
Big homes, duplexes and offices
One router can't always reach every room, especially through thick concrete walls or between floors. Our team can advise on adding extra coverage:
| Option | How it works | Speed in the far room |
|---|---|---|
| Wired access point | A cable from the router to a second Wi-Fi point | Full speed. The best choice |
| Mesh system | Two or more units that link by Wi-Fi | Good |
| Wi-Fi extender | Repeats the router's Wi-Fi | About half. Last resort |
In a storey building, plan on one Wi-Fi point per floor.
Good to know
Please don't move or replug the cables between the small box near the socket (the PoE adapter) and the router yourself. Ask us to arrange it.
